Flaxseed Oil provides the Omega 3 fatty acid Alpha Linolenic Acid (LNA), from which the body makes EPA (Eicosa Pentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosa Hexaenoic Acid). Omega 3 fatty acids are found in deep sea cold water fish, flaxseeds, walnuts and in smaller quantities in many nuts and green vegetables. Flaxseed is the richest source of Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Flaxseed Oil does not have environmental pollutants frequently found in Fish Oil and does not cause fishy breath or body odour.
Over the centuries, as man has moved from a hunter-gatherer diet to greater intakes of saturated and trans-fatty acids, insulin resistance has appeared with its related pathology. Modern day diets are deficient in Omega 3 fatty acids and high in Omega 6 fatty acids, which increase inflammatory mediators. Today chronic inflammation is one of the underlying pathologies for diseases like atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease and even obesity.
As against a desirable ratio of 1:5-10 of Omega 3 to Omega 6 the actual ratio today is 1:20-50.
Over 60% of the dry matter of the brain is made up of omega 3 fatty acids. They form a major part of the structural components of nerves and cell membranes. Omega 3 fatty acids are involved in the synthesis of many hormones, neurotransmitters, steroids and cytokines. They are known to reduce the mediators of inflammation significantly. [1]
Omega 3 fatty acids offer cardioprotection, neuroprotection and help prevent many degenerative disorders 2. There is evidence that they work as anti fats and also improve insulin sensitivity.
Improvement in muscle insulin sensitivity is due to higher omega 3 fatty acids in cell membranes. This helps to check the progression of Metabolic Syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Omega 3 fatty acids prevent the defect of insulin receptor signaling in muscle. [3]
Higher omega 3 fatty acids causes an increase in plasma membrane cholesterol efflux from vascular smooth muscle cells. [4]
Flaxseed Oil is the richest source of LNA. Deficiency of LNA accelerates Ageing & Degenerative disorders. Omega 3 fatty acids help prevent Ageing of Brain and Neuro Psychiatric Disorders. They are involved in the prevention of IHD and neuro psychiatric disorders, particularly depression, dementia, including Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. [2]
Omega 3 fatty acids prevent age-related impairment of hearing, vision, smell and perception of pleasure. They may help in many psychiatric disorders like mood disorders, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, dementia and psychiatric disorders of pregnancy and breastfeeding. [5]
Omega 3 fatty acids improve mood profile with increased vigour and reduced anger, anxiety and depression states. It is associated with an improvement of attentional and physiological functions, particularly those involving complex cortical processing. [7]
Flaxseed Oil elevates EPA levels comparable to Fish Oil supplementation. [8]
Omega 3 fatty acids have anti arrhythmic and anti thrombotic effects, due to which they reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death by 45-81%. [9]
Evidence favors recommendations for modest dietary consumption of ALA (2 to 3 g per day) for the primary and secondary prevention of CHD.[10]
N-3FAs inhibit the chemical mediators of inflammation and increase the regulatory prostacyclins. The major mediators inhibited are Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), Leukotriene B4 (LTB4), Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNF alpha), Interleukin 1 Beta (IL-1 beta ). [1]
Fytage may help in many chronic inflammatory diseases like atherosclerosis, chronic hepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, liver cirrhosis, lung fibrosis, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis. The doses used were between 1-8 g/day. [11]
Omega 3 fatty acids reduce accumulation of body fat by limiting both hypertrophy and hyperplasia of fat cells. [12]
Scientific studies have shown that dietary omega 3 fatty acids alter the composition of cell membranes and improve insulin sensitivity. Higher omega 3 fatty acid intake resulted in increased glucose and amino acid transport [13]
Omega 3 fatty acids help to lower muscle protein degradation [14]
With increasing age, the levels of testosterone decrease gradually and contribute to the process of ageing. A study in rats, has shown that feeding diets with high omega 3 fatty acids , resulted in an increased basal and LH-stimulated testosterone synthesis. [15]
